CFP Deadline: Oct. 15, Slavic ideas in the Philosophy and Political Thought of John Paul II, Poland

A conference on the Slavic idea in the philosophical and political thought of John Paul II is proposed to be held December 3-4, 2015 in Warsaw, Poland.

Call for papers:
The Slavic idea in the philosophical and political thought of John Paul II has not been profoundly investigated yet and its role in shaping the Pope’s attitude toward countries of Central and Eastern Europe has not been clarified enough. Equally, the tradition of debates on the place and role of the Slavs in the European culture, characterising ideologists, politicians and scholars related to the Slavic idea, has rarely been considered as an important factor in the politics of the Vatican under the rule of John Paul II. Exploring the Pope’s inellectual formation, the organizers of this conference assume that it requires an interdisciplinary approach and therefore address their invitation to researchers representing Slavic studies, theology, political studies, history and other related disciplines of humanities.

In connection with the discussion on this aspect of John Paul II’s legacy. the organizers would like to approach the subject from three main perspectives: history of ideas, related to the Slavic studies, theology and philosophy of politics. Among major themes of discussions and papers, the organizers propose these ideas to be considered by participants:
•    place of the Slavic idea and identity in the political vision of the reconstruction of Central and Eastern Europe in the 1980s and 1990s
•    interpretation of the Cyrillo-Methodian legacy in the works of John Paul II
•    reconstruction of history and historiographical narratives about Slaves and their role in history
•    place of 19th century Polish philosophy in the philosophical formation of Karol Wojtyla
•    vision of the Russian and Orthodox church in the light of the Slavic idea, as it was formulated in Catholic academic and political centres
•    pilgrimages, visits and debates of John Paul II with Slavic countries and communities
•    Slavic identity in the light of the discourse analysis and linguistic research.

The organizers hope that their invitation will give an opportunity to share some ideas on the problem. The conference would be, above all, a place to discuss the subjects proposed in this call for participation, to present research and approaches from various perspectives.

Declarations of will to participate with papers, together with short abstracts, should be submitted via email to the address: konferencjajp2(at)gmail.com before 15th October. The participation fee is 400 PLN (100 PLN for PhD students).

If you have any questions concerning the details of the conference, please don’t hesitate to contact the organizers through this address.
