Europa as the Other: External Perspectives on European Christianity

This event aims to add a non-European perspective to the contemporary academic and public debate on the nature of European identity and its relationship to the historical phenomenon of European Christendom.

The questions asked at the event, covering the period from the 18th century to the 1970s, with a focus on Africa and Asia, include: How did non-Europeans see European Christianity? What impressions of Europe and of European Christianity did they receive? What moral values did they believe to lie behind these appearances? Which aspects of European behaviour and habits attracted most comment, both favourable and unfavourable?

The papers will cover the period from the 18th century up to the 1970s and focus on Africa and Asia.
