CFP Deadline: Mar. 1, Conference, Jewish Music and Jewish Identity, USA

This conference on Jewish Music and Jewish Identity will be held October 19-21, 2014 at Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio. It seeks to engage scholars of Jewish studies, ethnomusicology, musicology, and the humanities in a discussion about the intersection of Jewish identity and music. In addition to academic presentations, the two-day meeting will include public concerts and lectures.

Music is an important component of Jewish culture. It mirrors and shapes the diverse modes of Jewish identity found throughout the world and across history. Music is ever present yet often remains an intangible sibling of the literary and visual arts. The aim of this conference is to bridge the gaps between Jewish studies, music research, and the humanities.

The organizers invite submissions for individual papers, panels, and lecture recitals. Submissions for individual papers should consist of a 250-word abstract, contact information, short bio of the speaker, and any a/v equipment needs. Proposals for a panel should include a 100-word description of the overall panel in addition to a 250-word abstract of each paper on the panel as well as contact information and a short bio of each speaker. The conference may include one or more lecture recitals. To propose a lecture recital, please submit a 250-word abstract of your topic, short bio, recording with excerpts of the music you will perform, and any equipment/instrumental needs (e.g., piano, amplification, etc.).
A special issue of the Journal of Jewish Identities will be created out of papers from the conference.

Proposals should be sent electronically or mailed to:
